General Liability Insurance for a Charter School

If you are opening a new charter or have managed the insurance for a charter school for years, you may be wondering why you have a general liability insurance policy.  In fact, in talking to many of our charter school clients, we have found that, while they know they need the insurance coverage, very few know what it is protecting their charter school from.

General liability insurance for a charter school provides insurance coverage against bodily injury or property damage where the school, its employees, directors, or other “insured” person is found negligent.  Standard limits on general liability insurance for a charter school include a $1,000,000 per occurrence limit with a $2,000,000 aggregate limit with additional limits for “personal injury” (claims related to libel and slander), completed operations, and a no-fault medical expense limit of $5,000 per – $10,000.

Common General Liability Insurance Claims for a Charter School

For the most part, Charter schools do a pretty good job of avoiding insurance claims that fall under general liability.   If they have a claim, we will typically see it associated with a bodily injury on the school’s premises, like slip and falls.  Also, we will see bodily injury accidents that happen to students can fall under the general liability policy.  (Be careful here, though, some policies restrict or even exclude bodily injury claims that occur to students.   Student accident insurance policies do a much better job providing coverage here, especially for more minor claims.)

How Much Does General Liability Insurance for a Charter School Cost?

The cost of general liability insurance for a charter school will vary significantly between schools because so many factors play into the calculation of the premium.   Typically, though, the cost of the premiums is based upon the number of students attending the school.   The insurance company will assign a rate per student, and the final insurance premium is calculated by simply taking the number of students multiplied by the rate.

Minimum insurance premiums for a general liability policy for a charter school can start as low as $500 a year for small charter schools, and it will incrementally increase as the number of students increases.
