As an agency that works exclusively with charter schools, we focus on avoiding potential and future claims with our clients.   And one of the most frequent claims that we experience with our charter school clients is slips and falls.   Slip and fall claims are some of the costliest and most litigious claims charter schools experience.  They are also one of the most preventable as well.

In fact, 50% of all accidental deaths result from slips and falls.  They also account for over 8,000,000 hospital visits every year.

So with those things in mind, we want to give you some tips to help your charter school avoid future claims.

Tip 1: Institute a program to have someone at your school regularly inspect all walkways, driveways, sidewalks, parking areas, stairs, and other walking surfaces to be sure they are free from debris, cracks, or other items that could cause a fall.

Tip 2: Be sure to check all carpet runners, rugs, and mats to be sure they are free from bumps.

Tip 3: Select floor treatment, cleaning, and maintenance products with proven slip-resistance characteristics.   In fact, according to Dave Ludwin, General Liability Risk Control Director for CNA Insurance, most slips and falls result from improper cleaning of the floor that causes most falls.

Tip 4: Verify that any recently cleaned areas have proper warnings.

Tip 5: Check that all stair railings are safe and secure.
